FUMIGATION SERVICE FOR ACCIDENTAL MICROBIAL SPILLAGE IN CONTAINMENT LEVEL 3 FACILITY
If you have a Containment Level 3 Facility in your Laboratory the information in this leaflet will be of interest to you. It concerns the fumigation of these Facilities in the event of an accidental microbial spill of Hazard Group 3 pathogens.
The 'Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, 2002' legislates that your Containment Level 3 Facility should be sealable for disinfection. The Regulations also require that you have in place an approved system for room disinfection in the event of an accidental microbiological spillage within the Containment Level 3 Laboratory. The recommended method of room disinfection is fumigation.
The process of fumigation is inherently dangerous and should only be performed by trained persons expert in the procedure. It also requires the use of self-contained breathing apparatus as a necessary safety precaution. Any person using breathing apparatus must be officially trained in the use of the apparatus. It is therefore an expensive procedure. At current prices this is in the order of: £5,000 - £6,000 capital outlay, £700 - £800 per year maintenance.
BioSafe Safety Services can provide you with a complete fumigation service which releases you from the difficulties of trying to organise your own arrangements, and the expense. We can provide the experts, the equipment and the service at an affordable price.
Our team of experts are microbiologists with much experience in the fumigation of Containment Level 3 laboratories.
To have this service at your fingertips all you need to do is become registered with our Scheme.

The first step is to establish whether your laboratory is sealable for fumigation or if modifications are necessary. We can help you assess the suitability of your laboratory and, if you require it, advise you about any alterations that are indicated.
We will then carry out a risk assessment of your Containment Level 3 Facility, with regard to fumigation and, if everything is satisfactory, register you on our Scheme.
You will be provided with an emergency telephone number to call when and if you have a spillage and require the service.
The emergency number will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In the event of a spillage, and after you have dealt with the staff involved under your own Local Code of Practice, you can telephone the emergency number to arrange for fumigation of the laboratory. Our team of experts will come to your laboratory as soon as is reasonably practicable to seal the room and carry out the fumigation. The complete fumigation and venting process will take about 14 hours.
Before leaving and handing your laboratory back to you BioSafe Safety Services will carry out appropriate tests to establish that your laboratory is safe to enter and furnish you with documentation indicating the results of the tests.
